Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme

The Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme is a senior cycle programme which was introduced into this school in 1989. It can best be described as an enhanced Leaving Certificate with a strong Vocational dimension.

The LCVP is a Leaving Certificate with a focus on enterprise and preparation for working life. This two-year programme combines the academic strengths of the Leaving Certificate with a dynamic focus on self-directed learning, enterprise, work and the community.

In most ways the LCVP is like the established Leaving Certificate. What makes it different is that students

  • Take some of their Leaving Certificate subjects from a specified set of vocational subjects
  • Study a recognised course in a modern European language
  • And have two additional courses, called Link Modules, in the areas of Preparation for the World of Work and Enterprise Education.

Students who qualify for the L.C.V.P. have a unique opportunity to develop their inter-personal, vocational, communication and technology skills. These skills are relevant to preparing for further education, seeking employment or in future planning to set up their own business.

The aims of the Link Modules ar to foster a spirit of enterprise, adaptability and initiative and to provide experience of the world of work.

Students taking the L.C.V.P. must study two Vocational subjects, Irish and a foreign language or a vocational language module. The L.C.V.P. is taken in conjunction with the established Leaving Certificate. There is an additional terminal written paper on the content of the two Link Modules. There is also an assessment of the portfolio of coursework

Among the activities undertaken are:

  • Visits to colleges, businesses and industries
  • Speakers from local enterprises, trade unions, banks, etc.
  • Work placement and work shadowing
  • Mock interviews
  • Mini companies
  • Careers investigation
  • Surveys of the local community
  • I.T. skills development.
